Busy is not what I counted on by getting old. Old is one thing, we all get here if life cooperates with our plans. Ever notice how life often thwarts the best laid plans? How I got here is anyone’s guess but here I am but here I won’t stay. Not until medical science comes to some new plateau that changes all things. Are you going to wait for this to happen? I’m not.
We live on what now seems to be an overlarge piece of property. It is, by ranch standards, tiny. One quarter acre with a year round creek in the back which is also part of the property. We didn’t pay a million for it, we paid under a hundred thousand for it. 95 to be exact. That was in the early eighties last century which brings me to my point.
Only one of my three children has been able to purchase a home and they are now on their second home. No, they aren’t rich either but they took a chance and went with it some years back. Interest rates be damned, they got into the market. Different era for my wife and I but we did the same thing and this is our third home.
I say that if you have the chance and can qualify, go for a house, any house to get into the market. Once you have a home you begin to have equity and that is what puts you on the road. Renting, unless you have to, is never going to help you get where you want to be. The prices I gave above were a heck of a stretch back when my wife and I bought. We went small, two bedroom and a decent lot. From there is when prices went through the roof and we rode that wave to where we are now.
You can complain all you want, we did, about prices, but you still have to take the risk and go for it. Somehow, if you keep your wits about you, you make it work. Spend your credit on something solid and not new cars or nice clothes. It is the only way to get where you would like to be. Remember ratio and proportion. That is the way you see your way clear.
