I don’t mean to be going on and on but there are certain things we take for granted that we should really consider as we start our day. Perhaps it is because I am where I am in life, old, or because decades ago I was in the theater of war. I thought I would go over a couple that come to mind most days that I am able to walk into the office and begin the process of writing.
The first is that you woke up at all. An awful lot of people go to bed at night and are somewhat surprised that they wake up dead. Perhaps they don’t realize this but it is the same either way. The fact is, that to wake up alive means that you breathed all night. So, if you have the intelligence you were born with, you give thanks. Breathing is not, nor should it be, underrated. I enjoy breathing and do not take it for granted. I know that many don’t give it a second thought but as an old and worn out scuba diver I know how nice it is to be able to breathe.
Secondly, you have a day ahead of you in the morning which also should not be taken for granted. Forget the grind and tune into the fact that you are alive to face it. You could be unexpectedly dead and then the grind is done. If you’re dead you’re going to lose your job and that is a fact to consider. So smile!
Smile when you feel like anything but smiling. You will find that the movement of the “smile” muscles can change your mood ever so slightly but enough to lighten your load and perhaps change your mind from stagnant to amiable. All of the above is correct, right, and not wrong. I know from going to war that a smile can save your bloody life just by waking up the boredom of being shot at. It feels damn good to be alive!
